Health and safety consultants in Wigan, on our own doorstep

Wigan is home. We handle fire, safety and construction compliance for buildings across the borough, from canal-side mills to town-centre offices, with one person answering for all of it.

If you are looking for health and safety consultants in Wigan, you have found a firm that is based here. Resilient Consult is a Wigan-based construction and compliance consultancy covering three areas that usually mean three separate suppliers: fire safety, health and safety, and construction consultancy. We work for landlords, schools, contractors, facilities teams and developers across the borough, from Standish down to Ince and out to Orrell. You deal with one contact who scopes the work, arranges it, checks it and explains what it means for you.

Being local helps in practical ways. A site visit in Pemberton or a meeting at Westwood Park fits easily into the day, and the buildings are familiar: mill stock from the canal era, older terraces, post-war schools and newer business units. Specialist parts of a job, such as fire surveys, asbestos surveys or alarm work, go to vetted specialist partners who hold the relevant qualifications and third-party certification, and you see the certificates.

What we do for Wigan clients

Fire safety and compliance

Mixed-use conversions around the Pier Quarter and older commercial premises in the town centre are where we most often find gaps between the fire risk assessment and the way the building is used today.

Health and safety

Employers in the borough, from food and engineering firms to care providers, use us for retained competent-person support, audits, COSHH assessments and policy writing, with asbestos surveys arranged for older premises.

Construction consultancy

On town-centre and brownfield schemes we act as Principal Designer, project manager, quantity surveyor or employer’s agent, so the client has one adviser checking cost, programme and compliance together.

Mills, pits and a changing town centre: what health and safety consultants in Wigan look at

Wigan grew on coal and cotton. In 1854 there were 54 collieries in and around the town, and early mills clustered at Wallgate beside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Trencherfield Mill, built in 1907 and Grade II listed, was renovated between 2005 and 2007 as part of the Wigan Pier regeneration and now mixes apartments with commercial and leisure space. A building like that puts heritage fabric, private flats and business use under one roof, so fire separation and shared responsibilities are the first things to pin down.

The town centre is changing as well. The council bought the Galleries shopping centre in 2018 as part of a regeneration plan, and the former Westwood power station site became the Westwood Park business park. Add the Wigan and Leigh College campuses, the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary on Wigan Lane and a large stock of schools, and the borough has every kind of building we cover, often within a mile of each other.

Questions from Wigan clients

All questions

Our Wigan building was a mill and now has flats above offices. Who is responsible for fire safety?

Usually more than one party. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, each responsible person must assess the risks in the parts they control, and where a building holds two or more homes the Order covers the structure, external walls, common parts and flat entrance doors. In a mixed mill conversion that often means the freeholder, the managing agent and the commercial tenants. We map who controls what, then arrange one co-ordinated fire risk assessment so nothing falls between them.

We are refurbishing an older unit near Wigan town centre. Do we need an asbestos survey first?

If the work will disturb the fabric, yes: plan for a refurbishment survey of the areas affected before contractors start. Separately, under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, whoever holds the repair or maintenance duty for non-domestic premises must assess and manage asbestos that is or may be present. We arrange the survey through a specialist partner, check the report, and fold the findings into your pre-construction information.

Is it worth using a Wigan-based consultancy rather than a national firm?

That depends on the job, but being close does help. Most of the buildings we deal with are in the borough or nearby, so visits to check progress, meet contractors or walk a defect list are easy to arrange. You also get one named contact who handles fire, health and safety and construction questions together, instead of three departments that rarely speak. Larger jobs further afield are still welcome; send us the details.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based in Wigan and work across the North West, including Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire. That covers towns such as Bolton, Warrington, St Helens, Preston and Chorley, as well as Manchester and Liverpool. For larger jobs or multi-site clients we can work further afield on request. Send us the details and we will tell you straight away whether it is something we can take on.

What is it about? (tick any)
For example: a four-storey block of flats that needs its fire risk assessment reviewed and the flat entrance doors checked. Or: an office refurbishment starting in spring that needs a Principal Designer and a cost plan.
Optional. Photos of the area, or an image of a plan or old report, help us scope it.
