Stockport made hats until its last factory closed in 1997, and its first water-powered silk mill, opened in 1732, was the first of its kind in north-west England. Cotton then dominated the 19th century, and Houldsworth Mill in Reddish, with its model village, is one of the best-known survivors. The town centre is framed by the railway viaduct of 1840, 27 brick arches and Grade II* listed, and by Merseyway, built over the culverted River Mersey.

Our school in Stockport has buildings from several decades. How should we manage asbestos?
Schools are non-domestic premises, so the duty to manage under regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 applies, usually to the body responsible for maintenance. You need a current asbestos register, a written management plan and a way to tell contractors and staff where materials are before anyone drills or fixes to a wall. We arrange surveys, review your plan and set up a simple permit routine for works.
Our industrial unit in Bredbury backs onto housing. Do we need a schedule of condition before we extend?
It is a sensible step. A schedule of condition records the state of neighbouring walls, fences and buildings before work begins, with photographs, so any later claim of damage can be checked against evidence. If the work involves a party wall, a separate notice process may apply, and we can arrange that. We prepare the schedule, agree it with the neighbours where possible and keep it with your project records.
