Health and safety consultants for St Helens, Haydock and Newton-le-Willows

Glassmaking, coal and canal heritage sit alongside big logistics sites near the M6 and a town centre being rebuilt. We handle the fire, safety and construction compliance that comes with all three.

Firms looking for health and safety consultants in St Helens tend to have mixed needs: a warehouse with racking and forklifts, an older works with asbestos in the roof, or a new-build scheme that needs a Principal Designer. Resilient Consult covers all three from our base in Wigan. We bring fire safety, health and safety and construction consultancy together under one point of contact, from survey to sign-off, and we explain the findings in language your managers can act on.

The borough’s employers range from glass and manufacturing to logistics, retail and public services, and many sites run shifts, agency labour and heavy vehicles side by side. Our work there is practical: audits that look at yard traffic and loading bays, risk assessments for maintenance tasks, and fire arrangements that suit large single-storey sheds. Specialist inspections are carried out by vetted partners with the right certification.

What we do for St Helens clients

Fire safety and compliance

Large warehouses around Haydock and Newton-le-Willows need fire risk assessments that deal with long travel distances, high-bay racking, battery charging and night shifts.

Health and safety

Manufacturers and logistics sites use us for audits, workplace transport risk assessments and contractor management reviews, with first aid and tower scaffold courses arranged through partners.

Construction consultancy

For demolition and regeneration work in the town centre we provide CDM advice, pre-construction information and co-ordination of pre-demolition asbestos surveys.

Industrial heritage, logistics and a town centre being rebuilt

St Helens grew on coal and glass, and the Sankey Canal, opened in 1757, carried coal from pits at Ravenhead, Haydock and Parr. Deep mining ended when Sutton Manor Colliery closed in 1991, and the former Parkside Colliery at Newton-le-Willows has since been approved for distribution use. Brownfield land like this brings ground and legacy questions, and the older works buildings that remain can hide asbestos and decades of patchwork alterations.

Near junction 23 of the M6, the Florida Farm development at Haydock now holds large-scale warehousing. In the town centre, the council bought the Church Square shopping centre in 2017 and is working with a long-term development partner on a masterplan, for which the Hardshaw Centre has already closed. Demolition and phased rebuilding in a working centre need tight CDM planning and good information about the structures being taken down.

Questions from St Helens clients

All questions

Our St Helens works dates back decades. How do we find out whether there is asbestos in the building?

Start with what you already have: old drawings, earlier surveys and the age of each part of the building. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 put the duty to manage on whoever holds the repair obligation, and they must assess whether asbestos is or may be present, then keep a written plan. We arrange a management survey through a specialist partner, check the register it produces, and help you keep the plan current.

We run a distribution shed near Haydock. What should our fire risk assessment cover?

Beyond the usual escape routes and alarms, a large warehouse needs attention on travel distances to exits, storage heights, battery charging areas, external yard storage and how the building is cleared on a night shift with fewer staff. The significant findings must be recorded and the assessment reviewed when layouts change. We arrange it through qualified assessors and work through the action plan with you, item by item.

Does a demolition job in St Helens need notifying to HSE?

Under CDM 2015 a project must be notified on form F10 if the construction work is scheduled to last longer than 30 working days with more than 20 workers on site at the same time, or to exceed 500 person days. Demolition is construction work for these purposes. Below those thresholds the client duties still apply. We check the figures with you and prepare the notification when it is needed.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based in Wigan and work across the North West, including Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire. That covers towns such as Bolton, Warrington, St Helens, Preston and Chorley, as well as Manchester and Liverpool. For larger jobs or multi-site clients we can work further afield on request. Send us the details and we will tell you straight away whether it is something we can take on.

For example: a four-storey block of flats that needs its fire risk assessment reviewed and the flat entrance doors checked. Or: an office refurbishment starting in spring that needs a Principal Designer and a cost plan.
